Peter Grootenhuis Life Sciences Internship Grant

Submissions close August 31, 2026 at end of day. Only applicants who have internships starting in October 2026 or later can be considered for this grant. Results will be provided in September or October depending on the volume of applications received.

The Peter Grootenhuis Life Sciences Internship Grant seeks to facilitate the transatlantic ambitions of young scientific researchers, specifically those who seek to apply their knowledge towards the advancement of human health by conducting cutting-edge life sciences research.

By contributing to the costs associated with international internships for ambitious and globally oriented students, the grant supports recipients in their quest to bridge and enrich their scientific insights with invaluable professional and personal experiences abroad. The grant is named after the late Peter Grootenhuis, a Dutch-American medicinal chemist who co-led the development of three FDA-approved drugs while working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. These drugs have drastically increased life expectancies for Cystic Fibrosis patients all over the world.

After finishing his PhD in the Netherlands, Peter found it challenging to secure funding for a postdoctoral position. Eventually he was able to obtain a NATO fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry at The University of California, San Francisco, but it was frustrating for him to come close to missing out on that opportunity. Peter was deeply inspired by his postdoc experience in the USA. Several years later, he immigrated to California, where his scientific contributions culminated. Hence, it is in his spirit that this fund is offered to life science researchers who want to pursue their dreams abroad.

Eligible applicants fit the following profile:

• Current students (undergraduate or graduate levels) OR recent graduates of a Dutch research university
• Have already secured an internship in the United States in the field of life sciences.
• Preference will be given to applicants in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmaceutical sciences, but this should not deter you from applying if you do not fit this profile

The award package includes $1,500 per month for up to six months as well as coverage of the J-1 visa for up to six months. A travel stipend will also be provided.
